BELLE, W.Va. — U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), Ranking Member of the Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee, and Tom Carper (D-Del.), Chairman of the EPW Committee, today toured Marmet Locks and Dam. The Marmet Locks and Dam are operated by the Huntington District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), which the EPW Committee oversees.
“The Marmet Locks and Dam are critical to the navigation of the Kanawha River, keeping commerce flowing safely and efficiently,” Ranking Member Capito said. “Today’s tour was an insightful experience as to how we as legislators can best support the Corps and in turn support the Kanawha Valley and its communities.”
“Much like the Port of Wilmington, the Marmet Locks and Dam is a great example of the impact that infrastructure has on local economies,” Chairman Carper said. “It’s also a reminder of the important work that Corps does and the need for greater federal funding. As we begin work on the next water infrastructure reauthorization bill in Congress, I’m grateful to tour this facility with Senator Capito and hear directly from officials on the ground.”
Earlier, the senators hosted a field hearing in Beckley to examine the unique challenges that small, disadvantaged, and rural communities face in accessing and maintaining drinking water and wastewater services.
