INHOFE SAYS NEW CAR REGULATION IS FLAWED APPROACH TO REDUCING OIL DEPENDENCE

Obama Proposal Is a Prelude to ‘Glorious Mess’ of EPA GHG Regulation

Washington, DC—Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), Ranking Member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, said the Obama Administration’s new greenhouse regulation for motor vehicles is a flawed approach to addressing America’s dependence on foreign oil.  He also noted that it serves as the prelude to the more far-reaching and economically damaging regulations that will result from the endangerment finding for greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act.

Sen. Inhofe released the following statement in response to the Administration’s announcement today:

“I’ve never believed that a command-and-control approach to addressing America’s dependence on foreign oil is workable or effective.  So the Obama Administration’s announcement today, though touted as such, will not enhance America’s energy security, and, in fact, will make new cars more expensive and less safe.  Beyond that, today’s announcement is a window into EPA’s endangerment finding, which will unleash a cascade of new government regulations on farms and small businesses, raise energy prices for consumers, and make manufacturers less competitive in the global marketplace.  With today’s proposal, EPA’s ‘glorious mess,’ in the words of Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.), is growing and taking shape, and it will exact a heavy price on the American people for no climate benefit.”
