WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.) released the following statement after meeting with Pete Buttigieg, President-elect Joe Biden’s nominee to lead the U.S. Department of Transportation. Senator Carper’s statement on the announcement of Pete Buttigieg’s nomination can be found here.

“It’s not hard to see why my dear friend, President-elect Joe Biden, has tapped Pete Buttigieg to be part of his cabinet. Through his tenacity and intellect, Pete has managed to accomplish things in a matter of years that for many require decades. Like me, he chose to answer the call of duty, completing a deployment in Afghanistan as a Naval Intelligence Officer. Pete also served as mayor of his hometown of South Bend, where he brought people together to make his community more connected and prosperous. He wasn’t afraid to roll up his sleeves and demonstrate the work that goes into repairing a pothole before meeting with local leaders on plans to improve safety and equity.

“Pete also understands the urgency of addressing the climate crisis and the role that plays in breaking ground on a better future. Over the past four years, Infrastructure Week has become a meme for the outgoing administration’s dysfunction and incompetence. I have confidence that will change under Pete’s leadership. He has what it takes to deliver on the promise of building back better and putting our transportation sector on a path to net-zero emissions. I urge my colleagues to quickly confirm Pete so that he can waste no time getting to work for the American people.”
