Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Chairman of the Environment and Public Works Committee, issued the statement below following the guilty plea by John Beale, a career employee at the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) who was hired in the 1980s during President Reagan's Administration, for theft of government property.

Senator Boxer said: "It is outrageous that this admitted con man lied to his supervisors in order to steal hundreds of thousands of dollars from the federal government going back to the George W. Bush Administration. I am very grateful to the EPA Office of Inspector General and EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy for putting an end to his thievery. I am also grateful to the Obama Administration's Department of Justice for ensuring that the American taxpayers will be reimbursed."

Senator Boxer will hold a briefing for Senators with EPA's Office of Inspector General on this investigation on Monday, September 30 at 4:00 pm ET in 406 Dirksen Senate Office Building. This briefing will be open to the press.
