WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Chairman of the Environment and Public Works Committee, held a press conference today to discuss the progress made on a surface transportation bill this year. Senator Boxer and her Senate colleagues have developed a bipartisan bill - Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century (MAP-21) - which would reauthorize the nation's surface transportation programs for the next two years. This bipartisan proposal passed unanimously through the EPW Committee on November 9, 2011, and is awaiting consideration by the full Senate. The current surface transportation authorization is set to expire on March 31, 2012. More than 1,000 organizations, businesses, coalitions and other groups from all 50 states signed a letter that was sent to Senator Boxer and other Members of Congress yesterday urging quick action on a strong surface transportation bill before the current extension expires.
