WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.), top Democrat on the Environment and Public Works Committee, released the following statement in response to the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) Inspector General report released yesterday that found GSA failed to analyze the terms of its lease agreement with Trump Post Office, LLC in violation of the Foreign Emoluments and Presidential Emoluments Clauses of the U.S. Constitution.
“Three weeks after the November 2016 election, I first requested information into what appeared to be a clear conflict of interest between the president and his real estate business, and an apparent failure by the General Services Administration to properly enforce terms of its lease agreement with Trump Old Post Office, LLC. Since then, at hearings and through additional correspondence, I’ve called on GSA to investigate or provide answers on this matter.
“Two years later, the issues surrounding the Trump Hotel lease remain unresolved. Over the course of those two years, GSA has failed to justify its mismanagement of this lease, providing insufficient and oftentimes evasive responses to my repeated requests for the truth. This report brings us closer to the truth, but Americans deserve to know that those at the highest level of government are following the rules and serving the public, not using their positions to enrich themselves.”
