WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.) released the following statement after meeting today with Brenda Mallory, President-elect Joe Biden’s nominee to lead the White House Council for Environmental Quality (CEQ). Senator Carper’s statement on the announcement of Mallory’s nomination can be found here.

“Ensuring that climate is part of all federal decision-making will be no small task for the incoming Biden Administration. After meeting with Brenda Mallory, I have the utmost confidence in her ability to succeed as CEQ chair—a role that will be integral to implementing President-elect Biden’s climate agenda. As she knows, the head of CEQ works to harmonize federal agencies and advance the goals of a healthier society and cleaner environment in concert with a stronger economy. It’s a critical role during a critical time in our country.

“Undoing the damage from the past four years and putting us on a path of progress will not happen overnight. These things are going to take patience, determination, and experience. Fortunately, Brenda Mallory has the expertise and experience needed to drive climate solutions and environmental justice efforts in the Biden Administration. Her entire career is a testament to her ability to leave things better than how she found them. I believe that is exactly what she will do as CEQ chair.

“As Chairman of the Environment and Public Works Committee, I will soon hold a hearing to consider her nomination for this role. I look forward to doing so and working with my colleagues to confirm her historic nomination as the first Black woman to lead CEQ.”
