Washington, D.C. -- Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Chairman of the Environment and Public Works Committee, issued the statement below following the release of the final report to the President by the Chemical Facility Safety and Security Working Group.
Senator Boxer said: "To avoid another tragedy like the West, Texas explosion, we must improve coordination between federal, state and local agencies, enhance information sharing, and modernize safeguards at chemical facilities. This report is an important step in the process of ensuring that the nation's chemical facilities are safer and more secure. The Environment and Public Works Committee will schedule an oversight hearing on the report to make sure that solutions are put in place to protect communities across the nation."
Following the tragic chemical explosion in West, Texas in April 2013, President Obama issued an Executive Order in August 2013 to help strengthen safety and security at chemical facilities and improve protections for workers, first responders, and local residents. The report was prepared by the Chemical Facility Safety and Security Working Group, which includes the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, pursuant to the Executive Order.
