Statement of Senator Jim Jeffords, I-Vt.
Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works
Regarding the Environmental Protection Agency’s New Source Review Proposals
September 8, 2006
The EPA's latest round of so-called reforms of New Source Review certainly displays the persistence of the Bush Administration's attempts to riddle the NSR with polluter-friendly loopholes. As one court has already said of a previous effort, "only in Humpty Dumpty world" would EPA's reading of NSR make sense. Instead of enforcing the law as written and pursuing ongoing enforcement cases, this Administration expends huge amounts of time, energy and resources just to make the Clean Air Act more friendly to polluters. We should be looking for ways to protect the health and safety of people who breathe the air, not the industries that pollute it.
