Washington, D.C. -- Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Chairman of the Environment and Public Works Committee, issued the following statement regarding President Obama's nomination of Gina McCarthy to become the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). McCarthy currently serves as the Assistant Administrator for EPA's Office of Air and Radiation.

Senator Boxer said: "The President could not have picked a more qualified person to lead EPA at this critical time. The combination of her experience, intelligence, energy, and unquestioned expertise will make Gina an effective EPA Administrator. She has a deep understanding that the health and safety of the American people depends on clean air and clean water. Gina is the right person for the job, and we will move forward with her confirmation hearing as quickly as possible."

Originally from Massachusetts, McCarthy and her husband, Daniel McCarey, have three grown children.
