WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.), top Democrat on the Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee, announced the members who will be serving on EPW’s four subcommittees during the 115th Congress.

“Our committee has some of the greatest environmental champions in the Senate,” said Senator Carper. “We’ve been a strong team in just the first few weeks of this Congress, and we are eager to continue working together on behalf of all Americans. With our new ranking members helping to lead the charge, including two of our newest members – Senator Duckworth and Senator Harris – this group is ready to get to work to safeguard the progress we’ve made and look for smart, new ways to protect the health and safety of our environment and the American people.”

Clean Air and Nuclear Safety

The subcommittee on Clean Air and Nuclear Safety oversees implementation of the Clean Air Act, and is charged with monitoring the Tennessee Valley Authority, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and nuclear plant safety.

“I look forward to working closely with Chairman Capito as Ranking Member of the Clean Air and Nuclear Safety Subcommittee,” said Senator Whitehouse. “The Subcommittee works on the Clean Air Act and our nuclear safety laws, which are vital to Americans’ health and wellbeing.  Given the climate crisis and an Administration at the beck and call of big polluters, our mission is more important than ever.”

“We have a moral obligation to make sure our children’s drinking water is clean and safe, and as the top-ranking Democrat on this subcommittee I will do everything I can to ensure our water systems aren’t poisoning our children,” said Senator Duckworth. “I’m also looking forward to serving as a voice for hardworking people by advocating for infrastructure investments that create good-paying jobs and by protecting the Great Lakes from pollution and invasive species like the Asian Carp.”

The subcommittee is also responsible for conducting oversight of agencies, departments, and programs within the full committee’s jurisdiction.

“The fight to defend the health and safety of our families, our workers, and citizens is more important now more than ever,” said Senator Harris. “I look forward to the work ahead with my EPW colleagues on this subcommittee to advance an agenda to clean up contaminated sites in California and across the country, maintain my commitment to environmental justice, and provide oversight over fundamental environmental and infrastructure policies.”

Transportation and Infrastructure

The subcommittee on Transportation and Infrastructure oversees the Federal Highway Administration, the Economic Development Administration, and the National Dam Safety Program. It also oversees implementation of the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) and the Stafford Act, and is charged with monitoring federal disaster relief programs and green buildings standards.

“I am humbled to be selected to serve as Ranking Member on the Senate Environment and Public Works Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee, which has a tremendous bearing on the daily lives of citizens throughout our great union, and especially in Maryland,” said Senator Cardin. “The subcommittee is uniquely positioned to advance measures that can enhance the conservation of the Chesapeake Bay, improve the capacity of the Port of Baltimore, and restore damaged shorelines. From ensuring the strength of our water infrastructure to the safety of our bridges and roads, the Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee serves as a national planner, sentinel and steward of the public’s safety. The subcommittee also oversees policies regarding public and green buildings, the fortitude of dams, and efforts to preserve our historical resources, along with federal disaster relief programs and the Economic Development Administration. This combination of diverse and challenging responsibilities is the reason I have appreciated the chance to serve on the subcommittee since 2006. With the prospect of bipartisan support for a potential comprehensive infrastructure bill that may move ahead in the coming months, I embrace the opportunity to serve as the subcommittee’s Ranking Member into the future.”
