 Chairman Boxer Announces
Date of Yucca Mountain Hearing
Full Committee Hearing Scheduled for October 31, 2007            Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, announced today that the Committee plans to hold an oversight hearing on the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository project on October 31st, 2007 at 10:00am EDT.  The Environment and Public Works Committee has jurisdiction over the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the agency that will act on the Department of Energy's Yucca Mountain license application.  The Committee also has oversight over the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which is charged with setting radiation standards for the site.   Chairman Boxer and other Senators, including Majority Leader Reid and Senator Hillary Clinton, a member of the Committee, have expressed a high level of interest in the issues surrounding the Yucca Mountain project.  Additional details about the hearing, including the list of witnesses, will be announced on October 24th.
