Washington, D.C. – The minority members of the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee today requested that committee consideration of Utah Governor Michael Leavitt to be Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, scheduled for Wednesday, October 1, be postponed. The Senators sent to following letter to EPW Chairman James Inhofe: September 30, 2003 Senator James Inhofe Chairman Senate Environment and Public Works Committee Dear Mr. Chairman; We are writing to request that the business meeting to consider the nomination of Governor Leavitt to be Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency scheduled for Wednesday, October 1, 2003 in the Environment and Public Works Committee be postponed at least two weeks. We are now in receipt of responses to the questions submitted to Governor Leavitt by EPW Committee members as well as our responses to our outstanding information requests to the Agency. As is Senate custom, Committee members expect full responses to their questions prior to casting a vote in Committee so that they may evaluate the qualifications of the individual who has been nominated. Our review of these responses reveals that they are incomplete in numerous respects. We are hopeful that with this additional time the Committee can fulfill its responsibility to fully evaluate the responses provided by Governor Leavitt and to obtain the information we deem missing in the responses that we have received today. We look forward to working with you to obtain this information and to bring this matter to a vote in Committee. Sincerely, Senators Jeffords, Baucus, Reid, Graham, Lieberman, Boxer, Wyden, Carper, and Clinton
