Today the President celebrated the weakening of the Clean Air Act and touted his imaginary environmental agenda. Instead of working in a bipartisan way in Congress to strengthen our environmental laws, President Bush has chosen to push a divisive agenda that puts politics before public health.
The President’s energy and environmental policies, particularly the so-called "Clear Skies" initiative and his fossil fuels subsidy plans, are the exact opposite of what the nation needs, the public’s health requires and the law directs. The Administration’s deregulatory agenda, specifically the gutting of the New Source Review program, will lead to more pollution and therefore more disease and premature deaths.
We need a progressive, forward-looking energy and environmental policy that stops power plants from contaminating the Great Lakes with mercury, causing smog and reducing visibility, and contributing to global warming.
When it comes to the environment, the Bush Administration wants our future to look like the past.
