Vitter: Administration Fails to Implement President’s Signature Environmental Legislation
January 14, 2014

Today, U.S. Sen. David Vitter (R-La.), top Republican on the Environment and Public Works Committee, sent a letter to President Barack Obama regarding the Administration's failure to fully implement the Mercury Export Ban Act of 2008, which was sponsored by then-Senator Barack Obama (D-Ill).

"While we are all familiar with this Administration's selective enforcement of laws, which teeters on the edge of becoming unconstitutional, I would have never imagined that President Obama would stymie the implementation of his own legislation - the Mercury Export Ban Act," said Vitter. "As the President continues to selectively enforce provisions of laws like Obamacare, I hope that he can direct the Secretary of Energy to at least attempt to implement the Mercury Export Ban Act of 2008, a law he authored himself."

Under President Obama's leadership, the Administration has missed two clear deadlines, as required by the bipartisan-supported Mercury Export Ban Act, which designates the long-term management and storage of elemental mercury operated by the Department of Energy.
