Senators Boxer and Alexander Introduce Legislation to
Demonstrate Carbon Capture at Capitol Power Plant

Bill Would Provide Grants for Carbon Reduction Demonstration Project

Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, and U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Public Sector Solutions to Global Warming, Oversight and Children’s Health Protection, today introduced a bill to make the Capitol Power Plant the site of a demonstration project for existing technology to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from the burning of fossil fuels.

Senator Boxer said: “This bill will make the Capitol Power Plant the place to see today’s state-of-the-art technology at work. The project authorized by our bill will show that the technology exists right now to start capturing global warming pollution.”

The Boxer/Alexander Capitol Power Plant Carbon Capture Demonstration Act would create a demonstration project at the Capitol power plant for the capture or use of CO2 emissions from coal burned at the plant. The project would authorize $3 million to be awarded by EPA on a competitive basis for a two-year project that reduces carbon dioxide emitted from the plant when coal is burned.
