In 1837, the Senate created the Committee on Public Buildings and Grounds to oversee the development of the Federal buildings in the young, but growing Federal City of Washington, DC. The committee's public works jurisdiction has grown to include oversight of new Federal building construction, additions to the U.S. Capitol building and grounds, and the White House and its grounds
