WASHINGTON, JULY 30, 2001 -- U.S. Sen. Jim Jeffords, I - Vt., the Chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee today released the following statement.

"Today, the National Academy of Sciences told us what we already know, improving the fuel efficiency of our cars and trucks will simultaneously save consumers money, cut greenhouse gas emissions, and decrease our dependence on foreign oil. We should take their advice and act as quickly and responsibly as possible. There does not seem to be any question that we have the technology."

"On Wednesday, I am holding a hearing in the Environment and Public Works Committee to examine the environmental and public health impacts of emissions from the whole transportation sector. Global warming is on the top of my list of concerns."
